Aircraft

An aircraft is a vehicle which is able to fly by being supported by the air, or in general, the atmosphere of a planet. An aircraft counters the force of gravity by using either static lift (as with balloons, blimps and dirigibles) or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil (as with vehicles that plane the air with wings in a straight manner, such as airplanes and gliders, or vehicles that generate lift with wings in a rotary manner, such as helicopters or gyrocopters).

Although rockets and missiles also travel through the atmosphere, they are not considered aircraft because they use rocket thrust instead of aerodynamic loading as the primary means of lift. A cruise missile relies on a lifting wing throughout the majority of its flight regime.

The human activity which surrounds aircraft is called aviation. Manned aircraft are flown by an onboard pilot. Unmanned aerial vehicles may be remotely controlled or self-controlled by on board computers. Target drones are an example of UAVs.

Charter airline

n the context of mass tourism, charter flights have acquired the more specific meaning of a flight whose sole function is to transport holidaymakers to tourist destinations. Such charter flights are contrasted with scheduled flights, but they do in fact operate to regular, published schedules. However, tickets are not sold directly by the charter airline to the passengers, but by holiday companies who have chartered the flight (sometimes in a consortium with other companies).

Although charter airlines typically carry passengers who have booked individually or as small groups to beach resorts, historic towns, or cities where a cruise ship is awaiting them, sometimes an aircraft will be chartered by a single group such as members of a company, a sports team, or the military.

Many charter flights are sold as part of a package holiday in which the price paid includes flights, accommodation and other services. At one time this was a legal requirement (or one enforced by the airlines' cartel), but this is no longer the case, and so-called "flight-only packages" can be bought by those who merely want to travel to the destination. Such packages are frequently cheaper than regular schedule airline fares. Furthermore charter airlines frequently operate on routes, or to airports, where there is no scheduled service. Much of the traffic through small and medium sized airports in the United Kingdom consists of charter flights, and the survival of these airports often depends on the airline landing fee they get from the charter companies.

Many airlines operating regular scheduled services (i.e., for which tickets are sold directly to passengers) have set up charter divisions, though these have not always proved competitive with the specialist charter companies. In addition, some cargo airlines occasionally carry a few charter passengers on their jets. Conversely, some charter airlines have branched out into scheduled services when their charter operations have uncovered a need or a market niche.

The economics of charter flights demand that the flights should operate on the basis of near 100% seat occupancy.

The airlines operating charter flights, and the holiday companies who are the initial purchasers of seats on them, have acquired an unhealthy reputation for financial instability. There have been a number of high-profile cases where holiday-makers, mostly with European charters, have had their arrangements cancelled at short notice (and sometimes lost the substantial sums they have paid for package holidays), or have been left stranded at their destinations, by the collapse of the airline or holiday company. A number of compulsory insurance and bond arrangements have been put in place to minimize at least the financial risk to the public from such events.

Airplane seat map

An airplane seat map or seating chart, is a diagram of the seat layout inside a passenger aircraft. They are often published by the airliners for informational purposes, and are of use to passengers who can select their seat at booking or check-in.

Seat maps usually indicate the basic seating layout, the numbering and lettering of the seats, the location of the emergency exits, lavatories, galleys, bulkheads and wings. Airlines which allow internet check-in frequently present a seat map indicating free and occupied seats to the passenger so that they select their seat from it.

In addition to the published seat maps from airliners, there are a number of independent websites which also publish seat maps along with reviews of individual seats, noting the particularly good (extra legroom, quiet cabin, etc.) or bad (lack of recline, unusually cramped, missing window, etc.) seats.

British United Airways

British United Airways (BUA) was the result of a merger between Airwork Services and Hunting-Clan Air Transport in July 1960.

British and Commonwealth Shipping (B&C) became the newly constituted airline's main shareholder.

During the 1960s it grew to become the largest wholly private, independent airline based in the United Kingdom. By the end of the decade it had also become the UK's leading independent scheduled airline with a 71,000 km (43,217 miles) network spanning three continents - Europe, Africa and South America.

In November 1970 B&C sold BUA to the Scottish charter airline Caledonian Airways for £12m.At that stage it operated an all-jet fleet numbering 20 aircraft and employed a staff of 3,000.

Air Charter Limited

Air Charter was an early post-World War II private, independent British airline formed in 1947. These initially linked London and Paris (via Southend and Calais). In 1958 the process of transferring Air Charter's coach-air/vehicle ferry operation to sister company Channel Air Bridge began. In 1959 Air Charter became part of the Airwork group. Air Charter International

Air Charter was a subsidiary of Air France and was created in 1966 under the name SAFA-Societe Aerienne Francaise D'Affretement. From 1970 onwards it was know as Air Charter International. The first aircraft type operated was the Sud Caravelle and these flew charters to the Mediterranean area. It was not until 1979 that a new aircraft type was introduced in the form of the Boeing 727-200. As the business grew, the first widebody aircraft was introduced in 1988, the Airbus A300B4 and then the Boeing 747-200 for flights to the United States. By the mid 1990's the 727s were replaced by the Airbus A320. With the merger of Air France and Air Inter in 1998, Air Charter was no longer needed and services were discontinued.

Air charter

Air charter is the business of renting an entire aircraft (i.e., chartering) as opposed to individual aircraft seats (i.e., purchasing a ticket through a traditional airline). While the airlines specialize in selling transportation by the seat, air charter companies focus on individual private aircraft and itineraries, urgent or time-sensitive freight, cargo, air ambulance and any other form of ad hoc air transportation.

Air charter is also known as air taxi (though this term has other senses), executive charter, jet charter and is part of general aviation. In the United States air charter and air taxi operations are governed by Part 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, unlike the larger scheduled airlines, which are governed by more stringent standards of Part 121 of the FARs, which are regulations designed for scheduled air carriers.
